This note contains spoilers for the series.

The series name comes from the idea Vinge spawned to avoid trying to write post-singularity stories—the singularity won't come to Earth, since we're too far in and our local laws of physics simply won't support super-human intelligences.

The series contains a couple of the greatest SF books ever written.
